On Dec 6th, we presented the City Council a petition containing over 1,000 Leawood resident signatures in opposition to the Cameron's Court development plan. This was no small task as we had barely two weeks before the meeting to gather those in-person signatures. But the effort it took was worth it as the petition did have an impact on the City Council; some council members noted the strong public opposition to Cameron’s Court for their decision to oppose the project.
Unfortunately, the City Council did not take an official vote on the Cameron's Court project on December 6. Instead, they asked the developer to work with the City Manager and his team to make additional revisions before returning for a vote on January 3. Unfortunately, the City Manager made it clear to the Governing Body that any changes to the plan would be minor.
We feel like the impact of the initial petition for the December 6 meeting served our community well. Therefore we are offering up a new petition in advance of the January 3 meeting. We know that the holidays are in front of us but our hope is that an online petition will help in showing that our community remains strongly opposed to the Cameron’s Court project and wants our City’s Governing Body to support us in our opposition to the project.
And please remember, whether Cameron’s Court sits on your doorstep or not, if this plan is approved, it will set a precedent for development along the rest of the 135th Street corridor area, and south Leawood would be changed forever.
